Was this hell? It certainly felt like it. His skin was clammy. Hot, yet cold. And a drum pounded in his head. As he tried to bring his hand to his brow, he felt the stabbing of a thousand knives from shoulder to wrist, like splintered bones digging from the inside out. Alex cried out and let his arm drop back onto the twisted sheets. He realised it wasn’t just his arm; he was aching all over, his stomach cramping, and his throat dry as the Cappadocian desert. In short, he didn’t believe he had ever felt so awful in all his life, and that included the time he was turned into a vampire.

‘Alex?’ A voiced pierced his misery. Madison was here.

He wanted to open his eyes, but his eyelids were stiff and unyielding, like rusted metal.

‘Madison.’ Alexandre mouthed the word, but no sound came forth.

‘Alex, are you awake?’

He felt her breath on his cheek.

‘Maddy,’ he tried again. This time, a faint whisper emerged.

‘Alex, are you okay? Can you talk? What’s the last thing you remember? You went out to see Nadia. She was upset. What happened to her? Was it vampires? Were they attacking her?’

Her voice sounded too loud, but at the same time, it sounded fuzzy and strange. It felt like he was underwater. He couldn’t focus on her words.

‘Alex, what happened?’

And then he remembered.

Alexandre broke out in an even colder sweat as the memory of what had happened returned. The girl. Nadia. He had… Oh my God, he had kissed her. How could he have done such a terrible thing? What had he been thinking? With immense effort, he turned his head away from Madison, glad his eyes were still closed so he didn’t have to look her in the eye. Afraid she would guess what had occurred. He loved Madison. That other girl meant nothing to him, so why had he done it? What had possessed him?

What had happened after the kiss? Here, his memory went a little hazy. Had they taken it further? God forbid he had slept with the girl. He didn’t think he would have done such a thing, but the lust and longing he had felt were beyond anything. The feelings now came back to him with the force of a hurricane, but whereas last night he had been consumed by them, now he simply felt disgusted with himself. And now… now he was paying the price. Perhaps this was punishment; a physical manifestation of guilt.

‘Alex.’ Maddy’s low voice interrupted his self-loathing. ‘Alex, look at me. Can you open your eyes?’

He tried again. This time, his eyes inched open, to rest on the armoire. As his vision swam in and out of focus, he reluctantly turned to face her. She peered down at him, the expression on her face fracturing his heart into a million pieces. She, so tender and loving. And he, so undeserving and worthless. A tear squeezed itself from the corner of his eye and he let it slide down onto the pillow.
