Chapter Twenty-Two
For the next month everything was going great—for me.
Sarah had slipped on black ice on her way back from the general store and had broken her leg. Even though I wouldn’t have wished her to break her leg, with her home 24/7, I now felt safer as Mike wasn’t able to get me alone. However, being such an active person, Sarah was becoming increasingly frustrated as she could barely do anything in the house and couldn’t step outside the front door. To make matters worse for her there was a rumor spreading around town that Mike had been fooling around with some barmaid in Cooke City that apparently had quite a reputation for exercising her legs in an outwardly position.
If I were Sarah I’d have been relieved—it was the perfect excuse for her to throw his deadbeat butt out. But for some unknown reason she seemed to really love Mike and was devastated to even think he’d betray her, crushing their sacred marriage vows. I personally thought that the rumor was probably true as Mike hadn’t been paying me the slightest bit of attention over the past weeks. In fact he’d been out of the house more than he’d been home. At first Sarah had thought he was making excuses to get out of the house due to having to help out more with the chores, with her leg being broken, but I’d taken over most of the household jobs and was happy to help her out. As usual Mike hadn’t lifted a single one of his fat fingers.
One night Mike returned home in the middle of the night and Sarah finally confronted him. She was a complete mess and I suspected that she’d had a drink or two, for liquid courage. They’d had the hugest argument I’d ever heard, loud enough that I was sure anyone walking by would have heard them. Then in the next moment they were “making up” in the bedroom and I was pretty sure anyone passing by would hear that too.
Six weeks later Mike took Sarah to the hospital and she had her cast taken off, but still had to wear a walking boot. She was told that she’d have to have another couple of weeks off work and I knew she was beginning to worry about finances, as Mike wasn’t bringing in as much money as he used to. She even hinted at fostering another kid, but Mike was furious with her for even suggesting it. Sarah was beginning to become even more stressed and I wished that I could have helped her out more, but I had nothing to give, not financially anyway.
Mike continued on with his mysterious disappearing act, claiming that he had been given some overtime, but still Sarah never saw a dime of extra money. As the days went on Sarah became very quiet and spent most of her time asleep in bed. I’d bring her soup and her favorite snacks, but she wasn’t eating much, which was beginning to worry me.
