This painting, by Richard Lorenz, entitled "Last Glow of a Passing Nation" shows the defeat of Custer and his troops at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

Thousands of warriors crawled up the gullies toward the hilltop. Nearer and nearer they came to the soldiers. They arched their arrows into the soldiers’ ranks without exposing themselves to rifle fire in return. The odds began to win out. In time the soldiers’ guns fell silent. Not one man remained alive. Custer died of wounds to the head and chest. Despite Sitting Bull’s warning, the Sioux stripped the soldiers’ bodies of clothes and weapons. They took the army saddles and horses.2 Sitting Bull rode to the battlefield. He felt joy mixed with sadness. The Sioux women began their death songs.
