HUCK

I arrive at Kara’s store exactly at seven, just like she asked.

After we released Hamilton, I asked if she’d like to grab a bite to eat. She said yes, but asked if I’d meet her at the shop. I assume she has a little last-minute work to take care of after cutting out early to see the eagle’s release.

I’m glad she could make it. Sharing that moment with her is one I’ll never forget. It’s moments like that when I really love my job. But being able to share it with someone I care about made it that much sweeter.

It made it matter that much more.

I’ve kept my word at not trying any funny business with her. It’s been a struggle. One filled with lots of ice-cold showers and nights spent alone in bed with my own hand.

But I know she’ll be worth the wait. I’m more convinced of that with every second. She’s strong, independent, funny, and sweet. I’ve seen all of that on display over and over again.

Hell, she’s probably too good for me. But, if I’m lucky, she’ll look past that.

I knock on the door to the shop, which is closed. There’s no answer. I frown and check to check my watch.

It’s now one minute past when she said to be here. I raise my hand to knock again when my phone buzzes.

Kara’s name pops up on the screen. I grin instinctively. I like it when she calls me. Unless she’s calling to blow me off at the last minute. My grin turns into a frown as I answer.

“Hey, sorry I’m up in my apartment.”

There’s a tap and I glance up. I see the hint of her face in a window over the store. She waves.

“I’m kind of in the middle of something,” she continues. Oh, great. Here it comes. The blow-off. We’ve released the bird and now she’s under no promise to keep a little girl informed. I should’ve held onto the video I filmed for longer. “Why don’t you come on up?”

Oh. Well then. “Sure. How do I do that?”

She directs me to the back of the building where there’s a staircase. My brows knit as I touch the guardrail and find it’s wobbly. That’s not very safe. As I climb higher and higher, I see that the steps themselves are loose in more than a few spots.

Kara could get hurt on these. At that possibility pops into my head, my scowl grows more fierce.

I knock on the door. As I do, I can already tell the lock barely works.

It’s not my place to point any of this out. I’ll probably lose some of my cool points for this. But nothing will stop me from making sure she’s safe.

The door swings open and every thought flees my head.

There’s Kara, dressed in an impossible short red dress that clings to her curves. Her lips are painted a matching shade as her long hair falls in waves over her shoulders.

I swallow. Hard. “Umm.”

“Come on in,” she says. “I thought I’d make dinner tonight.
