Main Street had emptied out during the transition between the working day and dinner hour, but lights still shone from inside Coyote Run Veterinary Clinic.

“Ben’s working late,” I said. “He’s been annoyed at me lately. We used to get along so well, but ever since his family came, he’s testier.”

“He has a lot on his shoulders.”

“You do, too, but you hardly make me feel like I’m a pain-in-the-ass anymore.” I steered Oliver off Main Street, heading toward the burned houses in the historical neighborhood.

“Ben has his clinic and a family.”

“He’s not doing it alone,” I said. “Ava’s super-involved with her children.”

“I’m so glad I can be a sounding board for your complaints about your fantasy boyfriend.”

“The value of a fantasy is in direct proportion to its impossibility.” I pulled my scarf tighter around my neck and said, “I acquired an abandoned Labrador. He’s depressed and needed a lot of encouragement to eat.”

“‘Acquired’ is one of those slippery words, like ‘found.’ I had one repeat offender who constantly ‘discovered’ wallets and laptops. Why are we walking here?”

“Nice street, isn’t it?” Most of the decorations on the houses were lit up now. “Did you know that local history buffs, including Abel Myklebust, want to declare these kit homes historical landmarks?”

“Yes, and those for-and-against arguments take up way too much time at the Board of Supervisors’ meetings.”

I stopped in front of the charred remains of a burned house, a black shape against the shadows. “Tobie Mulligan thinks this fire might have been arson.”

“Tobie Mulligan is suspicious by nature.”

“That’s what she said!” I was so excited that I grasped both his hands. “I’m serious: That’s really what she said. I mean, it’s not funny funny, but it’s funny because that’s my favorite non-dog joke. You know what I mean.”

“Sometimes I actually do,” he said with a smile. “If there was sufficient evidence, the fire chief would have pursued it.”

Since no one was around, I leaned against Oliver, pressing my head to his chest. “It would be nice to spend whole days with you, just sexing and talking and going for hikes and binging shows.”

“Once we get past the New Year, things will slow down, and I’ll do a whole mess of things to you that require more than five minutes.”

Laughing, I said, “But I like it quick, hard, and dirty!”

“Irregardless, some things require time,” he said. “I haven’t even been able to focus on the Callahan murder. Everyone seems to have forgotten about it with the shoot-out up at the lake.”

“What shoot-out at the lake?”

“It happened last night. A house party got out of control and a dude went home for his gun. Someone at the party was also armed. Two were DOA, and three are in critical condition.”

“That’s horrible.”

“Yes, it is, and maybe now you know why a suicide victim isn’t at the top of our list of priorities.”

“There’s still the matter of who buried her.”

“You know that gathering DNA from a crime scene is more complicated than someone submitting a swab for a paternity test.
