But what about kids who whine as their default mode of communication? Is there any way to express our desire for a more pleasing tone?

For kids who seem to whine out of habit, we can describe our own feelings, give information, and tell them what they can do instead of what they can’t. “Nico, when I hear that tone, it doesn’t make me feel like helping! I like to be asked in a deep voice, like this.” Then you can demonstrate by using your most dramatic, gravelly voice. “Mom, can you spread the peanut butter on my bread please?”

If he keeps on whining you can offer a choice that will make him feel less dependent: “Nico, you can ask me in your deep voice, or if you’re not in the mood for doing that, you can spread it yourself. Here’s a plastic knife.”
