Chapter Twenty-Six

Fairy Godmothers

Stepping out into the corridor, Emma wondered what Lady Markham needed her for. Indeed, she had been most surprised to be called away from the children and asked to see to Lady Markham. However, the maid who had delivered the message and was currently seeing to the children had been unable to give her any details.

The day was drawing to an end. Darkness had fallen hours ago, and Emma knew that all over Pembroke Hall, guests were getting ready for the ball that very night. Wreaths with red ribbons and golden bells hung on doors and walls. Evergreen garlands sparkling with stars and berries decorated archways and windows. Candles in red, white and gold shimmered everywhere, their dancing flames casting a warm light. The smell of pastries lingered in the air, mingling with a hint of wood smoke from the fires dancing in every grate.

After knocking on the door Emma entered Lady Markham’s chamber only to find her jaw drop to the ground upon beholding the ladies gathered there. Already dressed for the ball, the assembled ladies shone like stars, their gowns exquisite and the smiles upon their faces radiant.

Lady Markham wore the ruby-red gown she had chosen a few weeks past while Abigail looked simply enchanting in the violet silk of hers. Charlaine with her bronze skin shone like the sun itself in her golden dress that sparkled even more magnificently in comparison to her raven black hair. Lady Pembroke, who was Lady Markham’s cousin and whom Emma had met only a few days past, wore an emerald-green dress, a perfect match to her fiery red hair.

Simply enchanted, Emma stood and stared, her eyes wide and the breath lodged in her throat. “You look magnificent,” she whispered in awe, her heart giving a slight twist as an unexpected wave of yearning caught her off guard.

“We do, do we not?” Charlaine exclaimed with a wide smile. She twirled in a little circle, making her skirts swish around her legs. “I feel like a princess.” The smile upon her face brightened, and the other ladies laughed softly. “Oh, the girls would love this, would they not?” A slight frown came to her face as she looked from Emma to Lady Markham. “Why is it that children are not to attend balls? Would such a night not to be a fairytale come true for them? How can we keep this from them when we know they would love it?”

Lady Markham laughed, one hand moving to her midsection. “Wise words, indeed.”

“That is a wonderful thought,” Lady Pembroke exclaimed as she tossed back her red curls. “Perhaps we should hold a ball only for our children, allow them to dress up to their hearts’ delight and make it very clear that adults are not welcome.”

Abigail laughed. It felt just the least bit strained as she glanced at Charlaine, obviously still not feeling quite at ease in her presence. Of course, it would have surprised Emma had it been different. “It would certainly teach them right, would it not?” she said, looking from one woman to the next.
