Kelly

Kelly was a nervous child and as she got older her imagination and fears continued to grow. She worried about everything! Her world became a very scary place, where danger lurked around every corner. She used to enjoy going for walks with her daddy, but once she started noticing the scary dogs on the street it was no longer fun! One time when they were walking down the street, she saw a large dog with a very loud bark. The noise scared her and the dog seemed angry to her. Another time she saw some people talking and the dog jumped up on one of them. What if a dog jumped up on her? She started to scan the street for any scary animals. If she saw one, she’d insist her dad carry her and bring her back home. She felt safe in her daddy’s arms.

The world suddenly seemed full of wild bugs, birds and animals that could hurt her. Why had she not noticed all these dangers before? Going outside became a nerve-wracking experience for her. She used to like playing in her backyard, but then she noticed the bugs and flies. Her mom seemed scared of the yellow flies she called “bees” and would swat them away from her if they came too close. This made her even more scared of those yellow flies. She could hear them buzzing around her and she would panic and run inside. Sometimes her mom would say, “It’s just a fly.” They all looked the same to her.

Going to the park or the zoo wasn’t much fun anymore. Loud ducks came up to her with their mouths wide open. She would scream in terror, fearful they were going to eat her. They gathered in groups and she would keep a close eye on them, instead of playing on the playground. It was hard to relax and have fun when there were angry ducks all over the park! The zoo was the same way. Angry, hungry birds would swoop down and try to eat her snack. There were so many trees at the zoo, it was hard to keep track of when a bird might swoop down.

Kelly was also afraid around her house. She was scared of the dark and of shadows. She was worried she might see a bug on the floor. She felt her mom could protect her, so she followed her all around the house. When she couldn’t see her mom or her mom went into another room, she’d panic. Without her mom she was not safe! Her mom had told her, “Don’t worry, I will keep you safe,” and she took that comment literally. She believed as long as she was with her mom, she was safe.

Kelly didn’t like crowds of people. People she didn’t know scared her. They would pat her head or expect her to talk to them. She didn’t know what to say and preferred to cover her face or look away. If a stranger stared at her, she worried they were going to try and talk to her.
