I like to study the iTunes and Spotify charts. It’s a great barometer to see who and what songs are buzzing. When I’m studying the charts, I’m mainly looking for artists that I never heard of. I then check to see what record label that artist is on. It’s rare to find an artist, who isn’t on a major label, yet, still make it to the charts. If you can make it on the iTunes or Spotify charts, without the help of a label, then you are really doing something special and you are worth being studied. I then do research on the artist. I check their different social media pages and see what their following is like. I look at their videos, their website, and I try my best to pinpoint where they are getting enough traffic to translate into record sales or streams. Any successful artist that makes it to the iTunes or Spotify charts, with simple research, you can usually track their success, easily. I remember when I first heard about the group “LMFAO”. With little research, I found out that they were the son and grandson of music legend Barry Gordy. No one makes it to the charts by accident. There is usually a source of buzz that can be traced. Do your research. Find out how they got there.
