Making offers—Candidate experience in this part of the hiring process is crucial to not let all the efforts of the previous stages go to waste. Know the market rate for the level of candidate you are hiring for and align with your human resource partners to make a competitive offer where possible. For startup companies, be sure to help the candidate understand the potential of any equity components of the compensation.

Many savvy DS candidates will have done independent compensation research of their own and negotiate, so make sure to align internally to have some salary increase headroom in your offer strategy. This can avoid a long turnaround for receiving compensation increase approvals that might cause you to miss the candidate’s decision time window for any competing offers.

Some less-savvy data scientists do not negotiate their compensation. Be sure to give them a reasonable level of compensation. When people find out they have lower-than-average compensation levels after joining, it will affect their attitude and motivation at work. By then, it can be a much more complicated situation to manage, as it can be much harder to justify a raise.
