The Feline in Grief
~~No Heaven will ever be Heaven for me; Unless my cats are there to welcome me~~ Unknown
Whereas many of us have experienced the devastating loss of a beloved cat there are also felines who will sadly experience loss through the death of their owners. Following requests on our Confessions of a Cat Breeder web site, it was decided to provide information to assist those caring for felines coping with this difficult situation. The Feline in Grief is being presented in abridged form from Volumes 2 and 3 of the Felines by Design series. Those residing in a pet restricted residence often inherit cats. Therefore it was felt that this publication should also address this sensitive issue.
There are many aspects of feline grief that are never considered until circumstances in life present this difficult situation. Felines will grieve their companion catâs death and will also deeply grieve their human soul mate when such a loss occurs. Felines will grieve during the dissolution of a marriage when their owners decide to separate. Felines will also sadly grieve a child who upon maturity will depart from the family home leaving their beloved cat behind. As a Feline Behavior Consultant I have dealt with various aspects of feline grief and learned through trial and error those methods that worked and others that were less effective. As every feline is different so are the various methods that may assist their owner during the feline grieving process.
Felines emotionally experience abandonment, fear and loss not unlike what we must process ourselves while we are coping with grief. However, whereas we understand the nature of our loss a cat simply knows they have been abandoned. Without an ability to comprehend the true nature of their ownerâs death they will additionally internalize the many changes that will quickly follow in their lives.
Even with the loss of one owner when a feline has been living with a couple, there are additional challenges they must process. Although changes in residence are not always necessary they are left residing with a grieving marriage partner. Cats are not only grieving themselves but may be the surviving partnerâs sole comfort. This feline will also witness their ownerâs change in personality and emotional discomfort on a daily basis.
Many felines also display symptoms of grief when a beloved family member leaves home for college. In the event a couple ends their relationship and separates what happens to a feline that has loved both owners and additionally must process moving to a second residence? A feline will become depressed when coping with unaccustomed or erratic emotions from their owner and like a sponge will absorb the same disturbed energy. Unless these situations are addressed with understanding and care many felines will react by displaying behavioral problems. Quite often such problems are temporary and will subside when the family adjusts to a new pattern of normalcy.
Personally I have also experienced several of these difficult situations. Dustin, my first domestic cat changed residences with me while I was grieving the loss of a long-term relationship.
