Body language
Your body language reflects your emotional state, and viceversa. Stand with your shoulders slouched over, look at the floor, fidget ⦠you will feel unconfident. Stand up straight, with your shoulders back, chin level, stomach pulled in, and you will feel more confident. So use your body language to reduce your nerves.
In the same way, pacing up and down aimlessly, consistently moving your stance, and in particular, rocking backwards and forwards whilst you are talking to your audience will send a message of insecurity to your brain. Placing your feet firmly on the floor with your weight evenly distributed will make you less fidgety and, again, help you to feel more confident. Opera singers stand with their feet shoulder-width apart with one foot very slightly forward, because it feels very secure to stand like this. Exactly where you place your feet is an individual choice, so do experiment to see which position stops you from rocking or shifting about.
Similarly, gripping onto things such as a lectern can also cause you to feel unnecessary anxiety, by sending a message of insecurity to your brain. Relaxing your grip relieves tension in your arms and throughout the rest of your body and, in turn, relaxes your mind, making you less stressed.
A secondary result of this is that, apart from feeling calmer and more confident on the inside, from an audienceâs perspective you will also appear more confident. And if you look confident, your audience will have more confidence in you - and what you have to say which, in turn, increases your power to influence their decision making process.
