Choose a Blog Idea with Five Simple Questions
If you followed the previous seven steps, then you’ll have hard data on a few different topics. But that doesn’t mean you should pick something just because it’s profitable. Ultimately, it’s your level of passion that determines your long-term success as a blogger.
In this section, I’ll go over the final phase of the niche selection process. It starts by looking at each idea and asking five simple questions. If you can answer “yes” for all five, then this topic is the right one for you.
Question #1: Can You Generate 50 Article Ideas?
Running a blog can be grueling—especially if you often suffer from writer’s block. That’s why I recommend you map out a content plan before committing to a certain idea. This can be done with the “50-blog-post test.”
Get out a piece of paper and a timer. Set the timer to 10 minutes and then write down every possible topic you’d like to cover for a potential blog. If you can crank out 50 ideas in a few minutes, then this shows you have a decent level of interest on this subject.
What if you struggle with article ideas? This is a strong indicator that you don’t have a lot of knowledge or passion about this topic. In all likelihood, you’ll struggle in this market. The best thing to do is eliminate this idea and move on to something else.
Question #2: Can You Be a Unique Voice?
You need a hook that separates you from the competition. The “blogosphere” is a crowded place, full of websites vying for attention. The only way to stand out is to develop a unique voice that’s different from the masses.
Look at what other bloggers are currently doing. How can YOU do it better? What makes you unique? What problems and frustrations are being ignored? Are there gaps in information? What are some sub-markets in this niche?
Your goal is to find a hook that’s missing in your market and fill that need!
Question #3: Can You Become an Authority?
I’ve already talked about the 3 B’s of authority. You don’t have to start out as an absolute expert on a particular subject. What’s important is to commit to the process of growing into a thought leader.
To illustrate this point, take a look at this diagram, which represents Abraham Maslow’s “Four Stages of Learning.” Your goal as a blogger is to reach the unconscious competence stage. At this point, you’ll be a leading expert in this subject, and more importantly, people will look to you as an expert.
What’s my point?
Blogging success happens when you demonstrate authority in a subject. People follow you because they seek your knowledge. Real expertise comes from real involvement in a market. You need to dive in with both feet and learn everything you can about this topic.
This philosophy will also help you maximize your online income. As an authority, you’ll:
** Learn the language and buzz words that prospects use
** Find out what really goes on in the mind of
