Loving speech and deep listening are wonderful methods for opening the door of communication with loved ones, including children. As parents, we should not use the language of authority, but the language of love and understanding with our children. Only then will they confide in us their difficulties, suffering, anxieties, and dreams, which will help us to understand them better and love them more. If our love isn’t based on understanding, our children won’t experience it as love. You can sit next to your child, or even your partner or a friend, and ask, “Do you think I understand you well enough—your difficulties, your suffering, your dreams and deepest desires? Please tell me. I don’t want to make you suffer. If I don’t yet understand, then please help me to understand.”
