Sometimes it’s easier to buy all the parts for one assembly as a kit. This chain primary assembly will fit Evo Softail drivetrains, either ‘90 to ‘93 or ‘94 to ‘97. Kustomwerks

3) Next you have the ‘70–‘74 style, which uses a 12–1/2 inch shaft and a 14 inch push rod.

4) Then you will have the late ‘75 and up models, which also use a 12–1/2 inch shaft out of the tranny and an even longer, 14–1/8 inch pushrod. This is what some call the beginning of the end, where the new throwout bearing came in.”

“Now the reason you see the longer length main-shaft is due to changes in the design of the bike. The ‘64 and down bikes were kick-start only. In ‘65 the electric start came in so they needed more room on the mainshaft. In ‘70 the cone engine was introduced.”

“If you’re building a bike from swap meet parts, eBay or the parts pile you scored, here’s the deal: ‘54 on down, the engine sprocket shaft is shorty keyway style. ‘55–’64, uses a 3–1/2 inch long spline and thread. ‘65–’69, uses a 3–3/4 inch long spline and threaded section. ‘70–‘71 is 4–1/4 inches long splined and threaded section. In ‘72 they went to a larger diameter and dropped the Keyway and stayed that way ‘till mid ’81, which was commonized and used a different taper.”

“Don’t fall into the 4 in a 5 myth unless you fall into a good deal on one compared to what you’re gonna spend on that dirty OEM tranny that bubba discarded when he bought the 4 in a 5. Gear it and love it, you can do this through the engine sprocket or tranny. Gear according to your needs, one or two teeth is a big jump. If going taller on the tranny watch your clearance on the ratchet lid, a 26 tooth sprocket will fit but look close as Murphy is always close by. If you go for the cool factor and run a belt primary you will most likely have to change your sprocket, as it changes the primary ratio most times. Look for 1.60 to 1 reduction or if taller gearing is required, go to 1.55 to 1.”
