One day they accidentally left some boiled wheat sitting out for several hours, and it became dry and inedible. Yuck! They could have figured that the batch was a failure and just thrown it away. But their tight budget made them take another look at their mistake.

On that breakfast-changing day in August 1894, the brothers had been trying to find a substitute for bread that their patients could digest easily. When the brothers discovered the forgotten stale wheat, they decided to continue processing it to see what happened. They forced it through rollers, thinking it would turn into long sheets of dough.

Many famous and rich people stayed at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of former American president Abraham Lincoln, visited this health resort.
