Size 18–43in (46–109cm).

ID features Various shades of brown, gray, black, olive, and yellow. Speckled with various shades of green, yellow, blue, and tan with some almost appearing to have a stripelike pattern. Legless, resembling a snake, but with an undefined neck. Named after their ability to “shatter” meaning that they break their tail, often in several pieces, when under threat of predation. The tail will regrow.

Habitat Open habitats, woodland edges, flatwoods, and around wetlands, but also in a variety of other habitats. Typically hunts during the daytime in open habitats but often found taking refuge under boards or other debris.

Feeding A variety of insects, spiders, and other invertebrates, small mice, and the eggs of reptiles and ground-nesting birds.

Plants Logs or other vegetation of cover are important for laying eggs and protecting nests from predators.

Breeding Females lay eggs under a log or other object of cover, often in depressions and in sandy soil. Females guards eggs until hatching later in the summer.
