Chapter Thirteen

Jacqueline scanned the rooms, looking for any sign of Kincaid. She had followed him as soon as he left, but he disappeared. She couldn’t find him anywhere. Jacqueline decided she would return to her room and change into her nightwear, then wait until the house was asleep to sneak into this bedchamber.

She climbed the stairs to the first landing and heard the clank of billiard balls crashing apart. When she heard a gentleman swear, she knew she’d found Kincaid.

She leaned against the door and watched him round the billiard table and line up his shot. With elegance, he pulled the cue back and slid it between his fingers before pushing it toward his intended target. The ball slid smoothly across the felt, gliding toward the pocket and rolling in. Kincaid had yet to notice her and continued to shoot one ball after another into the pockets.

If Jacqueline didn’t know any better, she’d say Kincaid was a pool swindler. She had never heard where he won any games the gentleman had partaken in. If anything, they always joked about how he was the worst billiards player imaginable.

Kincaid had stripped off his suit, waistcoat, and cravat, and the top few buttons of his shirt were undone. Jacqueline’s mouth watered at the tempting sight of his bare flesh, and she wished to strike her tongue against it. Her gaze traveled down the rest of his body. His breeches emphasized his muscular thighs, leaving nothing to the imagination. But Jacqueline didn’t need to imagine because she’d experienced firsthand how strong they were. Especially when her own legs entwined with his.

Jacqueline shook her scandalizing thoughts away. “You play quite an impressive game, Kincaid.”

Kincaid finished his shot before glancing toward the lady who consumed his every thought. He couldn’t answer her without divulging the depth of his skill. Also, he no longer understood where he stood with her. Jacqueline’s moods of late changed more than the direction the wind blew. So he took a drink of his whiskey and waited for her to speak.

He watched as she strolled farther into the room. Jacqueline trailed her fingers across the felt until she reached him. Then those same fingers trailed along his arm and across his back, light as a feather as she sauntered around him and continued around the billiard table. Once she reached the opposite side, her mischievous smile widened, and he grew curious at what she found so amusing. Her mood appeared quite playful, but Kincaid remained cautious. One never knew how a Holbrooke lady’s mood shifted. He knew firsthand how Jacqueline was a walking contradiction. And when a Holbrooke smiled like that, one must remain on guard.

Jacqueline wanted to laugh at Kincaid’s guarded expression. She realized then how much she affected him. How her flighty moods changed the way he would treat or react to her behavior. It was at that exact moment she understood the intensity of his love.

She rolled the ivory ball toward him. “Shall we play a game?”

Kincaid cocked a brow.
