N ick never enforced his ban. Sky-high, he’d probably forgotten I was ever there. Yet after a while I didn’t visit the bachelor pad very much. I decided to bury my spinning head even further into the sand, so as to avoid it being strewn with the golden horse head and lordship over a dark world where I had multiple mothers and a stinging contact high. I decided that blunt anonymity was crucial to my salvation. As I rolled into the seventh grade, circa 1982, I wanted and needed to look like everybody else at Lawrence Junior High School. I bagged up any traceable evidence of Sid’s ties to the subculture, which, on my mom’s side of the bridge, fortunately amounted to little more than a few Chicago LPs, a fringed jean jacket, a beaded belt, and a funky old suede hat that inspired my father to call me “Leroy” whenever I wore it. I disposed of any trace of Sid, whom I blamed for keeping me just left of the center where I belonged. I assimilated with a vengeance. I became a JAP or Jewish American prince. By the way, Jewish American princes or princesses happily referred to themselves as JAPs. It was hardly an ethnic slur. How could it be? We were all of the same ethnicity. It was our identity. And I was happy to have one.
