“Oh sweetheart, why do you keep putting me into these positions?” Tyler said to himself as he stood across the street, staring back at her through the lounge window.

His fists clenched in his pockets as a hostile heat washed over him. There he was again watching from afar while a lesser man occupied his rightful place at her side.

He hadn’t expected to be on the outside looking in that time. He was her go-to guy when these things happened. He was the guy she called over to calm her nerves when a killer’s gift was left on her doorstep. He was the one she was supposed to cling to when she learned that her life was in someone else’s hands. So why was she sitting there with him?

That last woman should have sent Rebecca running full speed right into his arms. But she didn’t. Instead she ran to him and it would be a stretch to think he had any clue what was really going on with her.

He stood there unmoving across the street. She was looking right at him. And with the most lustful smile spread across her lips. It seemed like an eternity that they stared at each other, eyes locked in a longing embrace.

His pulse quickened as the angry heat from before transformed into a soothing warmth that traveled throughout his blood. He smiled and his head began to nod slowly. She was testing him just as he had been testing her. She failed his last test by running to him…but maybe that wasn’t really her answer at all. Maybe she was simply proposing a test of her own. How far would he go to defeat all suitors and win her for himself? That was the question that she wanted answered. He was sure of it. That was why she was being so cruel to him now. Her actions may say one thing, but her eyes cannot lie and her eyes were boring straight through his at that very moment.

He pulled his fist out of his front pocket and opened it. The diamond was heavy in his palm and the white streetlights bounced off of the many facets like lasers. With his other hand he rolled the ring back and forth across his palm feeling the sharpness of it, the weight of it. It was perfect and it definitely did not belong on its last owner. Something that beautiful deserved a new home on a woman just as perfect.

He closed his fist around the ring and shoved it back into his front pocket. He would answer her question and then he would give her one more chance to pass his test…but just one chance.
