Figure 3.11Vietnam: Associations with âCapitalismâ
Source: Indochina Research
Respondents were presented with a total of eighteen statements about capitalism, ten of which were negative and eight of which were positive. This set of questions confirms what we have already seen from the association test: Vietnamese people primarily associate capitalism with positive things. In fact, this finding is particularly clear for this set of questions. Of the thirty-three countries surveyed to date, Vietnam is the only one in which the five statements that receive the highest levels of agreement are all pro-capitalist.
In Vietnam, the statement that attracts the most agreement (78 percent) is: âCapitalism means economic freedom.â Only in Japan and South Korea did this statement also come in first place, and only in a total of five out of thirty-three countries so far has this statement made it into the top five most supported statements.
The second highest level of agreement, 74 percent, is for the statement: âCapitalism has improved conditions for ordinary people in many countries.â In only one other of the thirty-three countries where we have conducted the survey (Nigeria) did this statement rank among the top five. In most countries, significantly more people agreed with the negative statement: âCapitalism is responsible for hunger and poverty.â In Germany, for example, only 15 percent said âCapitalism has improved conditions for ordinary people in many countries,â while 45 percent said âCapitalism is responsible for hunger and poverty.â In Vietnam, the tables are turned: the negative statement that claims âCapitalism is responsible for hunger and povertyâ received significantly less support (53 percent) than the positive statement that âCapitalism has improved conditions for ordinary people in many countriesâ (74 percent).
The statement: âCapitalism encourages people to do their best,â which was the third most frequently selected statement in Vietnam, also attracted very strong support (71 percent). Only in three of the thirty-three surveyed countries did this statement make it into the top five.
In fifth place in Vietnam is the statement: âCapitalism ensures prosperityâ (64 percent). Again, there is only one other of the thirty-three countries in which this statement also makes it into the top five. In sixth place in Vietnam, we have the statement: âCapitalism may not be ideal, but it is still better than all other systemsâ (59 percent). The critical opinion that âCapitalism entices people to buy products they donât need,â on the other hand, was among the top five in eleven of thirty-two nations. In Vietnam, in contrast, this statement attracted less support than any other of the eighteen statements (23 percent), as shown in Figure 3.12.
