“Those who have evoked your anger” refers to the Jews, since Islam casts the Jews in the role of an accursed people, while “those who are astray” refers to the Christians since they are led astray into thinking that Jesus is the Son of God. We will go into more detail regarding this at a later point.

The Infallibility of Islamic Prophets

When I first read the Bible, what stuck out to me was the fact that all the protagonists were all just sinning humans. Heroes failed, kings sinned, immorality and idolatry went rampant, and it all came to naught, until the Son of Man, Christ Jesus, paid the ultimate sacrifice! This was in such stark contrast to what I have read in the Qur’an. In the Qur’an, all of the prophets, including Prophet David and Prophet Solomon were practically infallible.

The Indonesian Sunni cleric Ustadz (a Javanese title for an Islamic teacher) Abdul Somad, whose congregation counts into the millions at public rallies in that country, made several sermons following President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital at the end of the year 2017. Like any other Muslim cleric under the sun, Somad also felt compelled to go ballistic on the Jews after this declaration of the US President. In several televised sermons he scolded the Jews for having destroyed Allah’s revelations that Prophet Moses and Prophet David brought to them. Somad was of the opinion that the Jews could not be trusted since they even bad-mouthed their own prophet, Prophet David. According to Islam, David, as a prophet of Allah was rightly-guided and could never have committed adultery with Bathsheba. According to Islam David also never sent his Uriah the Hittite to die on the frontlines. That was not something a prophet of Allah would do! And so the cleric went to describe this as proof that the Jews falsified scripture for their personal gains. According to this Al-Azhar-educated man, the reason why Jews wanted to portrait Prophet David as an adulterer was so that the Jews can become adulterers themselves!

It is the Bible’s way to present us its protagonists with minimal additional commentary. The book rarely judges people and lets the reader come to their own conclusions. The Bible shows its protagonists as complex characters, who are sinners and mostly just as human as we are. Biblical characters fail and fail, and at the moment of their biggest failures, they usually choose a radical trust in God. It is in these moments that the Bible-authors show us, how to be a human who truly pleases God: through humility and surrendering. That is the object of most narratives in the Bible.

In stark contrast to that, the Qur’an tells us who Allah curses, and who Allah exalts. And all of its protagonists (including King David) are described as these two-dimensional super-humans who can’t have flaws.

Regrettably, the nuances of the Bible and the flawed nature of its protagonists are wholly lost to Islam, Muhammad and most Muslims—past and present.
