Homer also talks about the famous Trojan horse, which is a story that Iâm sure even your teachers know. To sum up, the Greeks left a huge wooden horse as a gift for the Trojans to signal their intentions to give up. Little did the Trojans know, a crack unit of Greek soldiers were hidden inside, and when their guard was down the Greeks leapt out, opened the gates and massacred the Trojans. A lovely story!
As a scientist and doctor, however, I have to tell you this simply isnât true. That tall tale came from Greek storytellers â a notorious bunch prone to embellishments or, as your parents would call them if you tried to get away with them, lies.
In fact, the wooden horse was most likely an enormous battering ram, covered in horse hide for protection, and perhaps with the ramming part shaped a bit like a horse too, for good measure. Rather than trick the Trojans into letting them in, the Greeks used this âhorseâ to smash the front door in â not quite as subtle a trick.
So if anyone asks you how many Greeks fit inside the Trojan horse, the answer is a big, fat zero!
