The Foot-Ankle Alignment Test (back view)

Turn around so your back is facing the mirror. If you can look over your shoulder and see the back of your feet we’ll proceed, otherwise get a friend in here with a camera and get them to take a snapshot of the back view of your legs. Yes, yes, I know, it must be a trusted friend.

Draw an imaginary line from the feet, through the heel bone, and up to the back of the knees. Again, check to see if it’s straight.

The Foot-Ankle on Tip-Toe Test.

Facing front again, get up on your toes. If your ankle is over the top of your toes in a straight line, then both your supination and pronation muscles are strong. If the foot twists to the side, then you have an imbalance in the strain between the supinators and the pronators, creating weakness. That means instead of a “square” movement you may be twisting your foot when it pushes off the ground, potentially causing stress on the muscles and ligaments and wear on the joints. (You may be twisting around an already locked spring.)
