‘You can’t play it!’ I butted in. ‘Yup, that’s us!’

‘OK,’ he said. ‘Well, come to the venue around 8. You don’t need a soundcheck, right?’

‘Nope!’ I assured him, before Matt could jump in and say that a soundcheck would actually be quite useful.

‘Cool. See you there.’

And that was that.

That evening we rolled up to the venue, where Jonathan Richman ushered us on to the stage, and we supported one of my rock ’n’ roll idols. The gig went smoothly – so smoothly, in fact, that at the end I swapped shirts with Jonathan and I still have his pink pinstriped button-down to prove it.

Later on, in the downstairs disco, Jonathan asked if we’d like to support him at the Town and Country in Kentish Town, a venue I’d been to loads of times before, but never dreamed of playing. We jumped at the chance, following him to London where we shared a stage with The Modern Lovers, the African palm wine guitarist S.E. Rogie and Frank Sidebottom’s Oh Blimey Big Band. I didn’t know it at the time, but apparently the keyboard player of Frank’s band was Jon Ronson, who had inherited the role from Mark Radcliffe – both of whom I would get to know in a non-musical capacity in the coming years.

Also at that gig was the Radio 1 DJ Andy Kershaw. He’d seen the Bottlers’ set and thought we were shit – an opinion he seemed only too happy to share with us. Propping up the bar with Matt, I promised him that we’d prove Kershaw wrong – that we’d have our moment in the sun and he’d have to eat his words. As it turned out, the Bottlers would go on to achieve a bizarre level of success that none of us could ever have imagined, thanks in no small part to the enthusiastic support of our greatest champion, radio legend Danny Baker.

But all that was in the future.

First, we had to face the Royal Iris . . .
