Engineering Aqueducts

Aqueducts and water systems would not work as well as they do without the hard work of engineers. One of the earliest machines used in water systems is the screw pump. This machine, which is still used today, was probably invented by the ancient Greek engineer Archimedes (c. 287 BC-c. 212 BC). One version of a screw pump features a pipe with a screw-shaped surface inside it. Other versions feature spiral-shaped pipes. By turning the screw, water is carried up the pipe. This machine was traditionally used for drainage and irrigation.
