Newcomers do not always understand the word âtrade.â They think it means to lose something. They wind up merely trying to capture lots of free things, even when thereâs nothing free to take. Thatâs a losing strategy.
Throughout a chess game, youâll have opportunities to take and take back. You win material by taking more than you give up. You lose material by getting back less. Often, you get the same as you give up. Thatâs a trade. In terms of material value, a trade is not automatically good or bad. The merit of a trade is based on another factor: whether it improves or worsens your position.
As a rule, you should trade when you have a material edge. Trading makes it easier to keep control, and it emphasizes your advantage. Four to three is good. Three to two is better. Two to one is even better. Another reason to trade when ahead is to eliminate potential counterattacks. If your opponent has nothing left, they are in trouble.
So, the logic is clear: when ahead, trade pieces!
