Karl Kamrath and his wife, Jeannie, were avid tennis players. She was the first female tennis professional at both the River Oaks and Houston Country Clubs. She recalled the early years: “All the area was woods and there was only one home on Wickersham, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Elledge. We bought the land for $5,000.00. I remember the first house well, there was a pine tree visible through the stairwell and every time it stormed I worried about damage to the house. Luckily, it never did fall.” Frank Lloyd Wright was Kamrath’s mentor, and they visited frequently. Jeannie explained, “Wright was a brilliant and innovative architect. We knew him well enough to stay in two of his homes, but I don’t think anyone really knew him.” (Courtesy of Jeanie Kamrath Gonzales.)
