CHAPTER ELEVEN

“The portraits look really nice all hung up,” Brenna said to Erik over morning coffee.

“Yes, they do. You’re the one that made them, so that credit is all yours,” Erik said.

Brenna looked out at the walls bordering the entrance to the living room. Two portraits were hung on either side of the apartment wings: Jerrik and Brandt’s together, and Colby and Erik’s together. She felt a great deal of accomplishment for how well they had turned out, especially considering the strange and pressured circumstances in which they were created.

“Thanks for your help last night, guys,” Brenna said.

Brandt set down his cup and ran a nervous hand through his hair. Brenna caught a glimpse of his forearm and was reminded again that she wanted to ask him about that tattoo. But she could tell from his tense reaction that now wasn’t a good time.

“We were simply making sure our guests didn’t overreach. Don’t mistake that as being anything else,” Erik said to her.

“No, of course, I just—”

“Brenna,” Erik interrupted. “The time for your decision draws near.”

“Why?” she asked. “Why do I need to make this decision so urgently? Why can’t we just all live together and be friends for a while?”

“That’s not how this is going to work,” Erik said with growing impatience in his tone. “You see, our guests are investors of sorts.”

Brenna wanted to stop him right there and let him know that Brandt had told her everything. That she knew the men from last night were more like a hunting party than party guests. But Brandt eyed her, and she kept her mouth shut.

“Investors are notoriously bad at being patient. And these particular investors are even worse.”

“What do your investors have to do with me?

“Depending on who you choose, our business dealings may change course. To be honest, your decision is rather holding things up for us right now. Do you have an idea of when you think you might be making a choice?”

“No.”

The one word was all that Brenna said. She didn’t feel like saying anything else in answer to Erik’s question. She could see out the corner of her eye that it was infuriating him, and she secretly figured that Brandt enjoyed seeing Erik squirm. Erik must have picked up on it too.

“I wouldn’t feel so comfortable about being a loner right about now,” he said, turning to Brandt. “Her decision, or lack thereof, will affect us all.”

“I’m not a loner,” Brandt answered. “We’re a team, aren’t we?” There was a slight sarcasm to his words.

“Mostly.”

Brenna thought it was peculiar how quiet everyone else seemed to be this morning.

“We’re going into the office this morning. All of us,” Erik said, getting up from the table. “Brenna, you’re coming too.”

Brandt raised an eyebrow.

“Cool!” Colby finally opened his mouth to say something. “You’ll get to see our fancy-schmancy office building.”

“Sounds fun. Should I bring my art supplies?”

“No need. You’ll be helping us with something much more important.”

“What is it?” Brandt asked.

“A show of good faith for our new investment.
