CHAPTER NINETEEN—JORDAN

“I think we both want to do the same thing right now,” Jordan said, as they drove away from Cami’s mansion. He glanced over at Nima, who was practically vibrating with impatience.

“The closest closed airspace to here is thirty minutes away,” Nima told him. Jordan glanced at the woman he intended to mate and grinned. Actually mating her could wait; for the moment, he wanted nothing more than to be in his other form, to feel the freedom of actually existing as a dragon, flying through the air and feeling it cool his body, breathing fire and forgetting he was also human—at least for a short time.

They would have to be careful, Jordan knew. He and Nima hadn’t been lying about the intensification of the snooping and attacks on them from Nima’s family. The Elders seemed mostly to want to leave them alone, maybe thinking that him and Nima being depowered was punishment enough. But their supporters—especially the wolves—were not so content, and Nima’s aunt and mother were clearly behind at least some of the most recent issues they’d run into; the most obvious one was the way that Nima’s finances were closed off, with only the most limited of her trusts—the only one she had total control over—left open to her. But there had been attacks as well, and not just by wolves; the Valko guard had had to take out some other shifters on Nima’s behalf, and Jordan had had a bad run-in a few weeks before, when he’d been getting groceries for the house. And finally, there were the dragons that had made it obvious to both of them that they were on the side of Nima’s family, rather than being willing to stay out of things or willing to ally with her, or with Jordan.

Jordan turned onto the highway and reached out blindly for Nima’s hand. He felt her fingers tighten around his hand, and smiled to himself. It had been sheer relief when Cami had given back his abilities, and Jordan knew, even without the mate-bond he would eventually share with Nima, that she felt it too. If her family had thought that making things harder for Nima would convince Jordan to give her up, their efforts had done more to get the opposite outcome: Jordan was more certain than ever that he wanted to mate the Azar heiress. She might end up taking other mates, but Jordan knew that Nima was in no hurry to commit herself, even if it would win a good ally against her family.

Nima gave the directions, and Jordan followed them, every moment feeling more and more anxious to get to a place where they could both transform. If he wasn’t careful, he knew, he’d begin to transform in the car. That wasn’t a good idea. Jordan forced himself to take a deep breath and exhale slowly, keeping an eye on the road and listening for what Nima told him.

“God, I wish we could have just done this back at Cami’s place,” Nima muttered, fidgeting in her seat, and Jordan chuckled.
