Chapter 15: Holly

Keller moved in front of Holly. He leaned in close and studied her unseeing eyes. “Holly? You okay?”

She blinked into empty space hardly able to breathe. “Johnny! He was just here. I saw him.”

Keller’s eyebrows shot up. “Are you sure?”

She shook the fog out of her head. She was in the basement. “I saw him! He was right here! You have to believe me.”

He eased closer and put his arms around her, but she couldn’t stop searching everywhere for Johnny. She saw him in front of her just a second before. Christ, he looked awful! He looked half dead. For a second, she thought he was going to cry. She barely had time to tell him she loved him. Then he vanished.

Her eyes clawed the room. She needed to catch just one more glimpse of him. She had to tell him she still loved him. She needed to make him understand that she was waiting for him to come back. She would do anything to help him, but she didn’t even know where to find him. She had no idea what was even wrong with him or if he was in danger.

Keller separated from her and guided her to the bed where Loch still lay. He pushed her down. “You need to sleep. Lie down here and I’ll get you something to eat.”

She glanced over her shoulder. Loch was awake, but he didn’t get up. He said he was too tired and Elise said he needed rest to recover from his injuries. Even so, his eyes glittered in the faint light. He read her with unmistakable accuracy.

She looked up at Keller searching for answers that would never come. “You believe me, don’t you? You believe I saw him, don’t you?”

He stroked her cheeks and hair. “How could you see him here? He isn’t here. Now lie down. You’re probably losing it from exhaustion and worry.”

He pushed her down and she obeyed. She stretched out and Loch scooted over to make room for her. He threw back the blanket and covered her with it. He wrapped his arms around her.

Keller leaned and kissed her. His fingers trailed off her chin when he straightened up. Then he looked over her shoulder at Loch. “Take care of her, will you, man?”

He walked away and there she was, in bed with Loch. Inescapable gravity pulled her against him, but her mind still revolved around Johnny. He was right here in front of her for only a second. She didn’t want to let him go so quickly. She didn’t want to let him go at all.

Guilt plagued her soul. She shouldn’t be thinking about Johnny when she was sinking into Loch’s arms. He wouldn’t appreciate sharing her heart with another man.

Who wouldn’t appreciate sharing her heart—Loch or Johnny? She got them confused. Who she was thinking about? Who was this she felt against her? Who was she loving right at this moment?

Was that Johnny breathing on her neck? Was that him clamping his muscular arms around her torso and sparking her desires? How could she be so disloyal to….
