VALENTINA

XVII century. 1666, Anno Domini. France.

Not far from Nimes.

“For so many years we have been waiting for justice to be meted out and the last descendant of the holy dynasty to be killed.”

Valentina felt the chilling voice of the priest penetrate into all the cells of her brain. She couldn’t breathe, she couldn’t think rationally; she couldn’t say anything as if she was under some hypnosis. She was made to drink some strange narcotic potion.

Valentina didn’t understand why and what she had to die for. Was it as a result of the fact that she had been serving God all her life and the heathens wanted to kill her now?

God damn them! They will burn in Hell for their misdeeds! She cried out to the sky, which was silent with no response to her pleas.

Valentina didn’t have the strength to resist. Her arms and legs were tied up with leather cuffs and pinned to iron rings that were embedded in the cold altar. She was lying completely naked. Valentina almost fainted from the excessive pressure on her wrists and ankles, but the filthy hands of the heathens didn’t allow her to pass out. They were shamelessly stroking her innocent body. They were studying it, tweaking it, as if they lusted to get inside her soul and her heart fully. She knew that the time would come and she wouldn’t be able to avoid punishment.

A fear of inevitability enchained her as Valentina wasn’t aware of what those inhuman people would do to her. She could only wait for her fate. She had her eyes locked on the ceiling covered with black smoke which had resulted from the sinister bonfire burning near her. She suspected that when the pagans had played enough with her flesh and fulfilled their destiny, they would throw her into the fire. The fire was made especially for her—for the last innocent girl, a descendant of the family of St. Peter, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. The girl’s identity, whose origin was a mystery, was disclosed due to her brother’s perfidy and greed. Her brother had sold her, as Judas had sold Jesus Christ for thirty silver coins, without any regret. He needed money to leave France, as he had to flee from his creditors. That was everything that he had explained to Valentina before people had grabbed her and thrown a black sack over her head.

“My brothers!” A loud voice broke the silence. “Today, at last, we will be free. Her soul will belong to us after she gives us her body. And now, let’s hear from Lord Serafin, our burning flame! Our protector and guardian—The Dark Lord of the Universe!”

In the large stone hall, the servants of the devil greeted their main heathen with applause. He appeared out of the darkness, gradually coming to the altar and peered at young Valentina.
