Chapter Five

MARINA

I’m outside Hotel Ginepro, making notes. The late afternoon sun has cast a gorgeous golden glow over everything. Lucky the dog, as yet unclaimed by anyone in the village, is scampering around by my feet. I should be taking everything in. Except my mind keeps wandering back to that kiss yesterday.

It was awkward again in the boat on the way back. Maxim obviously thought he’d acted inappropriately with me. He didn’t know my whole body lit up like a Christmas tree when he kissed me. I keep weighing it up in my head. He’s the boss, I’m only the trial employee. He has nothing to lose and I have my entire career at stake. He’s way older than I am, maybe fifteen years. And he’s serious and a man of few words, with a traumatic marriage breakup in his past.

I should stay far away from him. But here I am, trying to think about work and all I can think about is Maxim. My body craves his touch and I feel like there’s something missing because I’m not close to him.

My mind keeps racing around in circles. A minibus draws up and a smiling older man gets out. Mrs Virdis opens the front door of the hotel and shepherds a flock of guests outside. Once they’re all in the van, we wave them off together.

“What’s happening?” I ask.

“All our guests are staying for one night at the vineyard in the mountains. It’s part of the sommelier tasting package. The wine is incredible, you must sample it. I’m happy to have the evening off now Guido is here. I’m meant to be managing the hotel, not cooking.” She raises her eyebrows.

“Have you worked here for a long time?” We walk back into the house.

“Seven years. My husband is Sardinian and we moved out here permanently ten years ago from Rome. I’m from Devon, England originally. My family says I still have the accent despite speaking Italian so much.” She smiles.

“Oh, I’d love to go to England. That’s why I’m hoping it works out here. Interior decoration plus travel is basically my dream job.” I pause at the bottom of the stairs.

“I probably shouldn’t say this, but I heard Mr Winter on the phone singing your praises to his cousin. That’s Ryan Copper, by the way.”

“Wow, he’s a huge deal in the hotel world. I’m glad you told me. That’s encouraging. I was beginning to feel like running away! Enjoy your night off.” I smile and climb the stairs to my room.

Once I’m inside I take my time creating a series of mood boards for Villa Capella. I emailed Maxim my thoughts last night, agonizing over the message. Now I want to illustrate my initial thoughts and help him to see my vision for his new hotel. I lose myself in the work.

When I’m finished, I email it to him and lie back on the bed. My eyes are heavy and I doze off for an hour. The sun is starting to set when I wake up.
