Chapter 20

With her hand in his and the warmth of his body still clinging to hers, she doesn’t feel the cold as they climb the steps up to the gallery. Even in heels she isn’t stumbling. Daniel’s clever hands have made her body feel like liquid.

Daniel leads her in through the entrance, grabs a glass of fizz from a passing waiter and hands it to her. He can’t say he’s entirely steady yet. She’d taken control and he’d been happy to give her it all. That small move on her part told him a great deal.

They turn towards the bar area and she spots Jake waiting for someone. He looks good in the peach suit which highlights his athletic build. Daniel squeezes her hand and guides her towards Jake. She hadn’t thought about who they’d be double dating with.

Jake stands and envelopes her in a hug. “Darling, you look beautiful. The after sex glow really suits you.”

She blushes deeper than she thought possible as he kisses both her cheeks before he turns to shake Daniel’s hand. “Thanks for inviting me tonight.”

“Pleasure’s all mine. At least Hope has a friend here tonight.”

Hope notices that Jake appears nervous and it’s unlike him. He’s the most confident man she knows so his crush on the man is serious.

“Daniel,” a male voice, more like a soft caress, calls over to them.

She turns and nearly gasps. A man with striking white hair and the bone structure of a Greek god saunters over to them. The red suit he wears stands out against the clinical white walls.

The man grabs Daniel’s arm when he nears them. “You must tell your aunt that I’m not on duty tonight. She seems to think I am and she will not leave me alone. I’ve just had to fire a waiter because they walked by her without offering her a drink. That woman!”

Daniel laughs. “What the hell can I do to help?”

The man throws his arms up in the air, clearly exasperated. It takes him a moment to realise that Daniel has company and those amazing eyes swing around to her.

“And it’s a pleasure to meet you,” he murmurs as he steps towards her and kisses both her cheeks.

“Sorry, Frank, this is Hope.”

Frank’s eyes, the colour of the sky before a snow storm, sparkle as he smiles at her.

“I can understand why, Daniel.”

Why what? A conversation seems to play between the two of them. Why what?

Frank turns to Jake and smiles before kissing his cheeks. “Forgive me for our previous date. I have a rather demanding boss.”

“He does. I will vouch for that,” Daniel offers as his way of apology.

“And I punched her son, so the rest of the family isn’t all that nice either.”

“I remember that,” Frank laughs. “That was a good night!”

“I can’t believe you actually punched someone and I missed it!” Jake says. He looks a lot more comfortable.

“He had it coming,” Frank states. “That man does whatever the hell he wants, and Melinda only sees the sun that shines out of his arse.
