I can see Hook in the reflection of the mirror as I step out of the shower. This is his fault, so he has no reason to look at me like that. Like I’m the one who pulled away. Wrapping a towel around my body, I go to the closet and grab some sweatpants and an oversized shirt. My stomach is churning, making me think I’m getting close to starting my period.

Sighing, I pad to my room and grab a book from the nightstand. Hook’s phone is there, and I don’t mean to look, but when the screen lights up, I can’t help it. Trixie’s name flashes as a text message comes through.

Trix: I miss you. Can we talk?

In the bathroom, the water turns off. No wonder he didn’t want me to return the favor. He’s probably dying to get out of here, so he can be with her. God, how can I be so stupid? And why does it hurt so much knowing he’d rather be with her? Would he even care if he knew she was the one who drugged me so that George could take me?

Wiping at my eyes, I go to a chair by the window and sit. By the time Hook comes out with a towel around his waist I’ve managed to pull myself together. I hardly even notice how good he looks.

“We good?”

“Yeah.”

He dips his head. “I’m going to change and then I’ll have Smee order in some food.”

The thought of food really doesn’t sound good at the moment, but I know he won’t drop it.

“Okay.”

His eyes search mine before he grabs his phone and leaves. Great, now I really feel sick.

I mope around in my room until there’s a knock and Ivan calls out, “The food is here.”

Opening the door, I expect to find him holding a tray. He’s not.

“Hook thought it would be nice if we all ate together.”

Together? Like we’re some big, happy family? That’s a laughable thought.

“I’d rather stay in here.”

“Babe, I get that today was a lot, but this will be good for you.” His voice lowers. “It’s what we do after we’ve taken care of business. Since you helped, you get to be there for the meal.”

My eyebrows lift. Oh. Well, that’s a bit different then. I follow him to the dining room where the others are already seated. There’s an empty seat to Hook’s right or one between Kellan and Ronan. I pick the seat between Kellan and Ronan without hesitation. Part of me thinks they did this on purpose, to allow me the chance to sit away from Hook. Ivan winks at me from across the table.

“Want some wine?”

“Maybe just water for now.”

Kellan has my glass filled before I finish speaking. Reaching for it, I take a sip and try to pretend I don’t see Hook in my peripheral vision, staring at me. If things were different, I’d make a joke about how funny it is that me killing someone is what is bringing us all together.
