Chapter 20

Finn had woken early and enjoyed a quick breakfast before going to see the lads at the gallops. That way he hoped to see Sam, Connor, Harry and maybe Gavin in action, all in one place. He pondered on what he had learned from their visit to Clary’s Farm Foods. Wolf was no fan of Clary’s but was that a sufficient motive for murder? The fact that Clary had also started to grow cannabis was interesting too and did open up the list of suspects. Or maybe someone had tried to sabotage his business or had suspicions about his organic credentials, which clearly had been called into question? Perhaps, there was a fight and that’s how he met his death? Yet, why was his body found a couple of miles away, near the gallops? None of it made any real sense.

He had enjoyed the races at Cartmel. It was a great little course, very picturesque and charming, but the company less so. Hattie had been distracted by her burgeoning friendship with Jake, who he was instinctively wary of, and even Kimberley had seemed preoccupied and out of sorts after she had arrived late. He had suggested they spend the evening together after racing, but she had claimed to have a headache and had disappeared off home, leaving him feeling a little disappointed and confused. Kim had looked amazing in a tight red dress, with high heels and her hair in an updo but had looked very pale, he conceded. She must have felt ill or she perhaps she had wanted to avoid him. He decided that he needed to be more understanding. He would text her later after he had been to the gallops.

The gallops, even at six in the morning, were a hive of activity. There were horses and work riders from several yards there and he knew that horses from other yards would come later. The gallops were well used with some all-weather tracks, alongside the grass gallops, all going slightly uphill, which were ideal for training. There was an assortment of hurdle fences situated to one side of the field, which comprised a schooling area for National Hunt horses. It was also used as something of a wildlife park and he noticed birds and feeders in trees situated at intervals along the way. He spotted a couple of wood pigeons, what looked like an owl and a couple of magpies and no doubt there were lots of rabbits, foxes and badgers there too. The whole place was well maintained and professional. He noticed Hunt’s work riders in their distinctive navy and red silk caps, saw Connor riding and caught sight of Gavin. He nodded at Vince who was sitting in a Land Rover at the top of the hill. He saw Finn and beckoned him over. Finn settled down in the passenger seat next to him.

‘So, how are things going? Are you here to see Gavin? He’s back from Ireland.’

‘Yes, so I saw, and some of the other lads.
