Once weâre safely enclosed inside the villa, I release a gratitude-filled sigh. This badass super spy shit is harder than it looks. Especially when youâre wearing stilettos.
I kick the heels off and head for the bathroom, stripping my clothes off on the way. All I want is to wash this night away. I feel dirty, like squishy-Milo dirty. Death cooties are clinging to my skin along with pieces of Milo. Gross.
Plus, Iâve seen enough shows on killers to know you need to get rid of the evidence. We may not have killed him, but can you be arrested for carrying a dead body? We are outside of the U.S. right now. We could get locked up and no one would ever know.
I picture myself wearing a prison jumpsuit. Orange is not flattering on me at all.
The water is hot when I step under the vigorous stream. Itâs just what I need to wash away the ugliness of the past hour. Iâve seen and heard things Iâll never be able to forget.
They say thereâs a first time for everything, but I couldâve happily gone through my entire life without finding a dead Milo. But I guess as far as dead bodies go, this one was relatively tameâno pool of blood or exposed guts to speak of. If it werenât for the neck twisted at an odd angle, I wouldnât have known he was deceased. Of course him getting impaled on the dumpster changed that, but at least itâs over and done with.
Cal steps into the large shower embracing me from behind. I lean back against him with the water beating against my chest.
âAre you okay?â He sounds concerned.
âI am now.â
He pours shower gel into his palm, rubs his hands together, and massages the soap over my shoulders and down my arms. It feels amazingâso soothing. He continues to soap up every bit of my body. His touch is slow and careful, as if Iâm a wounded bird heâs trying not to scare.
When Iâve been washed from head to toe and rinsed, he turns me around to face him. Enfolding me in his embrace, he holds me close. My arms slip around him, enjoying the quiet strength he provides.
âI know carrying dead bodies is out of your wheelhouse, but you did a hell of a job helping me. I couldnât have asked for a better sidekick.â
Raising my head, I playfully poke his muscular pec. âHey, bucko, Iâm no one's sidekick. Donât make me remind you Iâm a badass super spy in my own right.â
He grins. âWhat are you going to do to remind me?â He leans down with wicked intent flashing in his eyes and catches my bottom lip between his. His teeth graze over the surface and give a gentle tug before releasing hold.
Rising to my toes, I hook my arm around the back of his neck. Iâm fully engaged in where this is going. This is the perfect distraction to make me forget what happened earlier.
Parting my lips under his, our tongues meet.
