DINI BLINKED AND STIRRED, her head pounding again. It seemed the more aspirin she took the more her head hurt, and the more she slept. Frowning, she turned her head toward the bedside table, where the small bottle of painkillers had been sitting earlier.

It was gone.

She pushed up onto her elbows and groaned as the world swung around her. Nausea rolled through her stomach and she gagged, barely holding it back. She shoved at the covers and climbed quickly out of bed, heading for a small, metal trash can she’d noticed a few feet away.

Grabbing the can, she held it under her mouth and retched into it until she thought she’d turn inside out. The pain in her head was joined by a new pain in her stomach, and a burning sensation coating her throat.

She swiped a shaky hand over her mouth and set the can back on the floor. She barely made it back to the bed before her knees gave out.

What was wrong with her? She decided she must have a concussion. She’d never had one before, but she understood they could be pretty nasty. If that were true, however, why had Andy brought her to that cabin?

He was a doctor. He should have understood she needed to be in a hospital. In fact, Dini wondered, why had he brought her to that cabin even if she didn’t have a concussion? She didn’t really know him all that well. Why would he bring her there instead of...?

Where had she been before he’d brought her to the cabin?

Pain throbbed through her head as she tried to remember. Dini longed for more aspirin, but she was afraid to take any more. Instead she reached for the glass of water sitting beside the bed and picked it up.

Her hand shook badly but, bracing it with her other hand, she managed to get it to her mouth without spilling any. The water was lukewarm but felt wonderful sliding down her parched and burning throat.

She sat there a moment to make sure the water was going to stay down, and then took another sip. After settling the glass back onto the nightstand, Dini looked around. The room looked the same as before. The window was open and a slight breeze slid across her clammy skin.

But the sun was much lower in the sky, telling her some hours had passed since she’d last woken up. Dini brushed hair from her face, her fingers sticking in several knots.

Grimacing, she stood up again and headed for a small mirror on the wall across the room, hanging over an old-fashioned pitcher and bowl. She checked the pitcher hopefully but it was empty.

She suddenly realized how gritty and greasy she felt. Looking into the mirror, dizziness swamped her. The woman staring back at her looked as if she had a fatal wasting disease.

Her usually warm, brown color was a pale, almost gray tone. Purple arcs underscored her dark brown eyes and red veins spidered across the white of one of them.
