TWENTY-NINE

M arcus had been waging a battle with himself for hours, choosing between his curiosity—the urge to go inside the system and scour through the secrets—and his desire to trust Evelyn.

He was happy that she was on his side. And though he had taken some precautions in case she denied him, Marcus felt like Evelyn deserved his loyalty. Instead of letting to his lesser instincts, Marcus left the unit and went shopping—the truest of American pass-times.

He wasn’t afraid of being discovered because no one could ever tell him to take his mask off and reveal his face. He wasn’t a danger to society; he was merely a careful individual who didn’t want to suffer the terrible curse of Covid-19. In a certain sense, Coronavirus and all the idiotic events around it have turned out to be wonderful for Marcus. He could move around as he pleased, right under everyone’s noses. A scary thought that terrorists and criminals could do the same entered his mind. Luckily, there were no reports of increased crime rates. Well, that’s if he disregarded himself and the failed attempt to capture him.

Marcus found his way to Home Depot, a store that had everything he needed. There was a lot of talk of lockdowns, but the current president was having none of that. Though a diplomatic disaster, this current president was going Marcus’ way, too. It felt for a second that the whole world wanted to see Marcus succeed. It was as if the Universe itself wanted to see Thoros removed from it. Who could really say that the pandemic wouldn’t end with Thoros’ death?

Marcus picked up a scalpel, new combat boots, industry-grade glue, black paint, a hot plate table top, camping stove, and a pack of blades for his scalpel, just to be on the safe side. He left the building and went for his car. Breathing was becoming more difficult for him with every passing second. There were testimonials by nurses of the conditions they were working under, even fainting at times. It was, during the pandemic, a thankless job. Marcus understood how that felt.

He popped the trunk of his car and dropped his bag next to a bag of groceries he had bought beforehand. He was tired of making runs to the McDonald’s and eating junk food, seeing himself in a great mood to cook. Besides, he needed a stove for the coffee.

When Marcus sat in his car, something echoed in his mind. McDonald’s. He was really craving what the French call Royale with Cheese. There was a drive-thru on the way home, he remembered, decided on satiating his cravings if its the last thing he does.

Marcus parked his car about three hundred yards from the storage unit. He unpacked himself a quarter-pounder cheeseburger and gorged while looking through his binoculars. Though very confident and relaxed, Marcus never lost sight of what was important—vigilance. This is true anywhere, especially in the world of espionage: no matter how close you are with someone, they are not your friend.
