ECU Selection

The appropriate ECU should be chosen early on but selecting the right one isn’t as easy as it is with B- or H-series engine swaps. Most modern Honda ECUs are equipped with immobilizers, which are designed to render the vehicle’s electronics useless unless they’re matched with their corresponding transponder key and receiver. The key, immobilizer system indicator, ECU, and immobilizer control unit (located at the ignition switch), must all work together. Of course, this presents a problem because none of the vehicles in this chapter are equipped with this.

Fortunately, there are three popular solutions. The simplest is to source a Japanese-spec 2001–2005 Civic Type R or 2001–2006 Integra Type R ECU. Earlier Type R ECUs like these feature immobilizers that can easily be bypassed; however, Type R ECUs are also costly and hard to source. They’re also (unless modified) only suitable for 2.0L performance i-VTEC engines, such as the K20A2.

To bypass the immobilizer, the main relay must simply be grounded on its own, not through the ECU. Simply cut ECU wire E7 and appropriately ground the wire’s main relay side to the chassis.
