It was fully dark. The Sangria pitcher was half empty. They had talked about the kids’ honeymoon, the new condo in the marina and Amanda’s business. Stan was still waiting for the question he knew Amanda had come to ask. He saw Amanda glance at her watch.

“Stan, there’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you but I’m not sure I know exactly how to ask it.”

Stan looked across the firepit, which he’d lit a little while before. “The best way to ask any question Amanda, is just come out and say what you want to know.”

“Okay then, can you tell me anything about Benjamin’s murder? I mean, is there any progress?”

Stan smiled a little, then said, “You know I can’t tell you about an on-going investigation. I can’t give out any details. But I will tell you this, we’ve interviewed a great many people and we have a working theory on how the murder happened. As for who did it, we’re still looking into several leads.”

Even in the dim light, Stan could see the tears welling up in Amanda’s eyes. She turned her head and wiped them away. “I know it’s hard to believe, especially after all the awful things I’ve said about him in the past, but I am so sorry that Benjamin is dead. He didn’t deserve to die like that.”

Stan replied, “No one does, Amanda.”

Maggie reached out and took her friend’s hand. “Mandy, he’s probably better off now. You’ve told me many times that he had a troubled life. Always in hot water with somebody or other.”

“He was, Maggie, but that doesn’t excuse the way I treated him. I could have helped him out, I’ve got the money. If I wasn’t so damn stubborn, he might still be alive today.”

Maggie quickly said, “Nonsense, Mandy. You know yourself that every time you bailed him out of a jam, he just got into another one. Ten years is a long time, and he apparently didn’t change his old bad habits.” She turned her head to Stan and asked, “What do you think, honey? You’ve seen plenty of career criminals. Do you think Mandy giving him money would have kept him alive?”

Stan shook his head. “I can’t answer that, Mags. I don’t know that much about Bennie Williams. I’m not even sure if his murder had anything to do with money, though it’s possible. As for him being a career criminal, there really isn’t any evidence to support that. His record is surprisingly clean for a man who wanted to be a wise guy. Amanda giving him money might have solved whatever problem he was in this time. But in the long run, enabling that behavior, allowing him to continue like he had in the past, well, eventually it catches up to them all. At some point, he would either have been killed or arrested and put in jail.”

Amanda said, “I’m so sorry I asked, Stan. This has been such a wonderful afternoon. I’m sorry I ruined it by asking about Benjamin.
