Sunday morning outside of San Francisco.

Anonymous pink plants animate the stucco

houses. Dawn is the pastel of Deco

paint so common here. A little homesick,

I look around for lyric things to comfort me. I pick

a cyclamen—so real after L.A.’s generic

blooms and, best of all, I know its name.

I miss that most, so far from home, though I have come

for it. Next door, a dryer starts to hum

and someone whose name I’ll never know

begins her day. The namelessness of hobos

now occurs to me. How long could I go
