“I’m sorry.” I make a mental note to ask Dad to pick up rose mint tea . . . and a teapot on his way home from work. “Do you want to talk about it?” This is something my mom usually asks when I’m upset, but the second I ask it, I wish I hadn’t.

Aunt Betty’s eyes narrow, but she doesn’t yell at me. “Sometimes I feel lost, like when I was four and couldn’t find my mother on the playground—panicked, I guess. Other times, it’s quiet, like I’m alone, even in a crowd.”

“That’s awful, Aunt Betty.” I swallow something caught in my throat.

“Well, you don’t have to worry about it for a long time,” she says.

“I might. I’ve never been away from the ranch overnight, and now I’ve been invited to do just that.”

“Something tells me there’s more to this story.” She starts to get up, and I help her.

I think about telling her about Tamson, but I’m not sure what to say. Plus, she lets out a big yawn that squeaks at the end. “Maybe we both need some sleep, Aunt Betty.” I walk her to her room—my room—and tell her goodnight.

She stops in the doorway and turns, frowning. “Is that Lizzy?”

“I don’t hear anything.” But then I do. I’m so used to Lizzy’s snoring that it didn’t register. “Dad says my sister snores like a motorcycle that needs a muffler.”

“My husband was the same way.” Aunt Betty listens for a minute or two, smiling as if hearing her favorite song. Then she shuffles into the bedroom. I’m pretty sure I hear her say, “Thank you, Winnie.”
