9 YELP FOR HELP

The following Friday I sat in my room going over the last-minute details for Home Sweet Forever Home, when Mom knocked on the door.

It was one day before the big day, and my best friends and I had worked nonstop to prepare. Scott printed a giant stack of flyers at work, and we’d passed out flyers to anyone and everyone we could. Emelyn’s mom had told every client who came into her salon about the event. Ruby had written an article for the school newspaper. And Myka had gotten her brothers to spread the word on their social media sites. The only task left was to go to Sprinkle & Shine tomorrow to help Uncle Patrick bake the cupcakes.

“I’m proud of how much time you’ve put into this,” Mom said as she looked at the papers and lists I had spread out on my bed.

“It’s the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life,” I said. I waited for Mom to agree with me, but instead she sank down next to me.

“Honey, Uncle Patrick wants to talk to you,” she said, and passed her phone to me.

“He probably wants to ask about what cupcake flavors we decided on,” I said as I grabbed the phone from her. “This is Lauren, dog lover extraordinaire.”

“Hi, honey,” Uncle Patrick said, and I could immediately tell that something was up. He didn’t have the happy sound in his voice that was part of what made Uncle Patrick my uncle Patrick. Mom joked that a tornado could pick up his house and take it away, and he’d still find the bright side. But today that was missing. In fact, he sounded exhausted.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“I am,” he said, and then let out a giant sigh. “But Sprinkle & Shine isn’t.”

“What do you mean? Did you run out of frosting? Use salt in the cupcakes instead of sugar?”

“I wish it were that simple,” he said. “No, this is worse.”

“Okay,” I said, and tried not to let the panic reach my voice.

“Last night I ran the dishwasher before I left, which I’ve done a million times before,” he said. “Except last night was the first time the dishwasher ever flooded. And when I say ‘flood,’ I mean a tidal wave of water. All over the shop. The floor has a few inches of water on it, and any of the boxes or supplies that were on the floor got soaked. We had to throw so much of our stuff out. It’s a disaster zone.”

“Is Sprinkle & Shine ruined?” I asked, and thought about how much I loved that place. I’d be crushed if he had to close the store forever.

“No, no, no,” he said. “We’ll be okay. I have a team in there right now to clean up. However, I’m short on supplies and there’s no way I can bake in there for the next few days. I’m so sorry, Lauren. We’ll have to reschedule the event for another weekend.”
