9 YELP FOR HELP
The following Friday I sat in my room going over the last-minute details for Home Sweet Forever Home, when Mom knocked on the door.
It was one day before the big day, and my best friends and I had worked nonstop to prepare. Scott printed a giant stack of flyers at work, and weâd passed out flyers to anyone and everyone we could. Emelynâs mom had told every client who came into her salon about the event. Ruby had written an article for the school newspaper. And Myka had gotten her brothers to spread the word on their social media sites. The only task left was to go to Sprinkle & Shine tomorrow to help Uncle Patrick bake the cupcakes.
âIâm proud of how much time youâve put into this,â Mom said as she looked at the papers and lists I had spread out on my bed.
âItâs the most important thing Iâve ever done in my life,â I said. I waited for Mom to agree with me, but instead she sank down next to me.
âHoney, Uncle Patrick wants to talk to you,â she said, and passed her phone to me.
âHe probably wants to ask about what cupcake flavors we decided on,â I said as I grabbed the phone from her. âThis is Lauren, dog lover extraordinaire.â
âHi, honey,â Uncle Patrick said, and I could immediately tell that something was up. He didnât have the happy sound in his voice that was part of what made Uncle Patrick my uncle Patrick. Mom joked that a tornado could pick up his house and take it away, and heâd still find the bright side. But today that was missing. In fact, he sounded exhausted.
âAre you okay?â I asked.
âI am,â he said, and then let out a giant sigh. âBut Sprinkle & Shine isnât.â
âWhat do you mean? Did you run out of frosting? Use salt in the cupcakes instead of sugar?â
âI wish it were that simple,â he said. âNo, this is worse.â
âOkay,â I said, and tried not to let the panic reach my voice.
âLast night I ran the dishwasher before I left, which Iâve done a million times before,â he said. âExcept last night was the first time the dishwasher ever flooded. And when I say âflood,â I mean a tidal wave of water. All over the shop. The floor has a few inches of water on it, and any of the boxes or supplies that were on the floor got soaked. We had to throw so much of our stuff out. Itâs a disaster zone.â
âIs Sprinkle & Shine ruined?â I asked, and thought about how much I loved that place. Iâd be crushed if he had to close the store forever.
âNo, no, no,â he said. âWeâll be okay. I have a team in there right now to clean up. However, Iâm short on supplies and thereâs no way I can bake in there for the next few days. Iâm so sorry, Lauren. Weâll have to reschedule the event for another weekend.â
Reschedule the event?
