Clueless

When we redesigned a rambling Victorian farmhouse, I assumed the house’s maze of hallways, nooks, crannies, and alcoves would be a perfect way to use my antique hooked and woven rugs in combination with Ken’s tribal and Oriental designs. Despite compatible design elements, the rug arrangement resembled stepping-stones or, worse, a rug showroom. We wanted to enjoy the old pine floors, so wall-to-wall carpeting was out. It was clear we needed to simplify and unify, so I turned to the principles of design. First, I made sure the spirit of each rug (color, texture, pattern, style) worked in its particular space. Soon, I realized that the unrelenting display of strong design elements needed breathing room. That’s when I decided to place natural sisal runners, trimmed with black cloth borders, between the patterned rugs to separate them. (My bordered sisal rugs came from two good catalog sources: Smith + Noble and Pottery Barn.) This broke up the busyness, unified the spaces, and allowed the individual beauties to show off.
