Heart still beating a million miles a minute, I step into my room and shut the door softly, leaning back against the hard wood. Fuck me. She scared me. No, scared is too mild of a word.

She fucking terrified me. I’ve never heard such a frightened scream, and it took me a few minutes of fumbling around to realize where it came from.

My first thought was of a camper needing help. Then I remembered there was no one here yet. Still, I ran outside, bare feet, and was halfway down the porch steps when she’d screamed again. A horrific, blood-curdling sound that you hope you go your entire life without hearing. I thought someone was hurting her.

By the time I got to her room, she’d been crying and mumbling to herself, thrashing around like she was being attacked in her sleep. Blankets around her ankles—fuck. I run both hands over my face and take a deep breath before crossing my room and lifting my phone to check the time. Three a.m. Perfect.

I walk to my bathroom and splash some cold water on my face before pulling on a pair of workout shorts, socks, and my running shoes. There’s zero chance of me getting any more sleep before my four a.m. wake up, so instead of even trying, I open my door and step out. As I’m moving down the hall, I pause in front of Kleo’s door.

She’s crying. I can hear it, and I reach for the knob, pausing right before my hand can close on it. Sobs of a broken woman reach me from the other side, and I want so badly to open the door, to walk in and offer her any comfort she’ll take because the sounds are gutting me.

I’d give anything to have her yell at me again, to see some fire in her eyes. She’d told me she didn’t remember the dream, and I could tell that was a damned lie. Her face was far too pale, eyes wide and streaked with red. I could go in there, offer her comfort or myself as a punching bag, but Kleo and I aren’t close. Hell, we barely tolerate each other. That fact has me withdrawing my hand. I wouldn’t be welcome, and it would probably just make things worse. For fuck’s sake. Shaking my head, I step away and head for the front door. And for the first time since I moved in, I grab my keys and lock the front door behind me.
