I sit up abruptly when Zach turns and then begins moving back towards me.

It was clear in his eyes that something bad was happening. I could feel it deep down inside my heart and soul too.

Kneeling down in front of me Zach sighs as he bows his head. “Knox wants to talk to you, Darling.”

“Is he alright?” I whisper.

Zach only responds by shaking his head.

My voice gets lodged in my throat as I come to the realization of why Knox wanted to talk to me. He wasn’t going to make it.

My best friend, my brother, was dying.

I whimper and take the walkie-talkie from Zach’s hand.

He moves to sit behind me before helping me push the button that would allow me to talk into it.

“Gale…? Knox…?” I whisper.

“We’re here, Sweetheart.” Gale replies softly.

“What’s going on?” I ask as I barely hold back the sob that wanted to leave my lips.

“You know what’s going on, Sweetheart. We all promised you that if something bad would happen that we would say goodbye.” Gale replies gently.

I nod as Zach wraps his arms around me.

“I don’t know if I’m ready to say goodbye yet, Gale.” I whimper.

“I know, Sweetheart, but we don’t have time.” Gale replies.

“Hey, Sweetheart, how are you holding up?” Knox then grunts out.

A sob falls from my lips before I calm myself enough to answer him. “I’m not holding up well, Knox. I don’t want to lose you.”

“I know, but you know how this life is. You gave me a few extra months to enjoy it.” He replies gently.

“I don’t want you to die.” I argue as tears begin streaming down my cheeks.

“Me neither, Sweetheart, I’d love to live a long life but it’s not going to happen.” Knox sighs.

Silence spans the distance between us until Knox speaks again. “You’re going to be alright, Sweetheart. Zach and Gale will take good care of you for me.”

“You better tell that little baby of your about his Uncle Knox too.” He laughs and then coughs.

“I’ll tell him all about you, Knox.” I promise.

“I love you, River.” Knox breathes out. “You were my light in my darkest hour, don’t ever forget that. Don’t let that darkness inside of you take over.”

“I won’t.” I cry.

“Don’t cry, Sweetheart.” Knox whimpers.
