Chapter Five

They thanked Anita and left, after getting directions to an all night box store.“So, you're going to leave her with me tonight?”

“What?” Darci was making a mental list of things to purchase. “No. Of course not. I'm going to stay there with her. You. Oh.” For all she knew River had a live in girlfriend.

River grinned. “Yeah, you can stay.”

They pretty much bought one of everything in the baby department. Darci fretted about all the clothing being too big until River reminded her the baby would be spending most of her time in the tub. Darci also bought some Christmas lights. “Because I know you won't have anything. And it's her first Christmas.” They had to go to one end of the store for canned cat food–River insisted on the most expensive— and to the other end of the store for milk. Then they had to back track for a blender.

By the time they got to River's place, a two story brick Tudor with trees growing close to the building, the baby was fussing and sucking her fist. They hustled her in and River whipped together a bottle.

“Look at that. She likes it.” River was so delighted that Darci let him give her the bottom half of the bottle, while she did some exploring. River’s home had three levels, the basement holding a large family room and extra bedrooms. Every room was furnished with expensive tasteful furniture. And nothing was black. Or vampire-like. It was so different from his little studio apartment stacked with books and computers. Darci could see no resemblance at all.

Until she came to his bedroom on the second floor. Instead of the brown and gold perfection of the lower level there was a jumble of bookcases and a long utilitarian table with computers crammed into the room. His bed was covered in a navy blue velvet quilt and thick dark curtains. Gorgeous.

Her sister Candi’s senior portrait sat on the bedside table, along with a framed snapshot of her and River at a Halloween Party. He’d been a mummy, she’s been an Egyptian Princess.

“Did you find the hot tub?” River, carrying the baby in one arm, pulled the tan velvet drapes to reveal sliding glass doors that lead to a glassed in balcony. Tinted glass, she noticed. Potted plants covered the ledge, and the canopy of the tree outside filled the window. It was like stepping into a tiny forest.

“I can give you a T-shirt for the tub, if you'd like. I don't mind if you want to go in with just your undies, but I probably won't be able to form a coherent sentence for the rest of the night if you do.”

“Oh.” Suddenly she was swamped with awareness of River. Did he still want her? Or was he just flirting? River, and her, in a hot tub, nearly naked. Their friends to lover romance hadn’t progressed that far, before the Incident. She gulped. “Yeah. T-shirt.”
