Chapter Eleven

Cayson

“This is a disaster.” I rested my face in my palms and sighed.

“He really said that?” Skye asked. “He doesn’t want to be your best man anymore?”

“Yes.” I kept my eyes closed even though my palms obscured my vision. “We should have just let him do it.”

“No.” Her voice carried her irritation. “He shouldn’t act like a brat over this.”

I lowered my hands and looked at her. “He’s hurt.”

“He should get over it,” she snapped. “This is our day. Even if we didn’t want him to be the best man he should accept that with a smile. He’s acting like a child right now.”

“I know,” I said in agreement. “But Slade does this when he’s hurt. And we really hurt him. This is really important to him. He wants to make us husband and wife.”

“I get that,” she said. “And it is sweet that he wants to do it. But I don’t trust him, Cayson. He’s going to make it into a joke. I want this moment to be perfect. We’re going to be husband and wife. It’s a big deal.”

“I understand,” I said. “But I really don’t think he would mess it up.”

She narrowed her eyes on my face. “Are you pushing for him again? We already said no and the damage is done. Let’s just move forward.”

“Skye, I don’t want to lose my best friend over this.”

“If you lose him, it’s because he’s being a selfish dick. And if that’s the case you aren’t losing anyone worth being sad over.”

I sighed and leaned back into the couch. “We’re getting married in a week. I don’t want Slade and I to be fighting.”

“I know. I hope he comes around.” Skye didn’t seem to be as worried about this as I was.

“What if he really doesn’t act as the best man?” I asked.

“If he screwed you over like that, he was never a good friend anyway.”

I closed my eyes and wished this fight would just go away. I wish Slade and I weren’t neck-and-neck like this. He was my best friend in the world and I hated hurting him. I wish this would all go away.

Four days came and gone and I didn’t hear anything from Slade. I hoped some space would calm him down and he would reach out to me. I kept checking my phone hoping to see a text message from him. When I went to Mega Shake for lunch I hoped I would run into him. He was even in my dreams.

I got a call from Conrad while I was at work. “What’s up?” I asked when I answered.

“Everything alright?” It was a weird question for Conrad to ask.

“Yeah…why?” Was it because I was getting married in just a few days? Before this fight with Slade all I could feel was excitement. I was about to marry the love of my life, the girl of my dreams. She would be mine forever. But now that joy left my limbs. All I could think about was my best friend.
