Wade and Trixie are engaged. I still can’t quite wrap my mind around that. I mean, I get that it isn’t a traditional betrothal in any sense of the word, but the law is the law. She’s bound to him until his venom wears out of her bloodstream…or until she stings him back and makes the marriage official.

Part of me wants to rage at Wade. I found her, so I got there first. I’m the bee who was chosen to marry the next queen, before our new queen larvae were wiped out in the attack. By all rights, Trixie’s mine. But I understand why he did it. It was life or death. His venom brought her back from the brink. I was one of the bees who lay atop her in the dogsled. I know how close she came to breathing her last breath. I probably would have done the same if I’d been in Wade’s position.

No, not just probably. I definitely would have done it, and then I’d be the one with the Cheshire cat grin, because I’d be the one bonded to the most gorgeous, sexiest creature – woman, bee, or in between – that I’d ever seen.

And the thing is, though she’s bound to Wade now, I still want her.

But would she want me? I’m not one of those old-fashioned bees. Just because I was chosen by the previous council to marry the next queen, I wouldn’t have forced the issue if she didn’t want me. Besides, queens always mate with multiple partners. They don’t choose just one. Few bees do. She might have married me, but she would certainly marry others as well. But I would be the alpha. Now, with Wade’s venom running in her veins, my alpha status would be questionable at best. And I don’t just mean it would be Wade and I struggling for dominance. Any other bee would sense another’s venom in Trixie’s blood. They would all question my legitimacy as her first mate. For all I know, Trixie probably doesn’t want multiple mates anyway.

Because Trixie isn’t a normal bee, not with her upbringing. I’ve spent enough time in the human world to know that they typically choose one mate and stay bonded to them for life. Monogamy, it’s called. And for the most part, they seem to like it. Won’t Trixie feel the same way as most humans? She expressed interest in all of us, and I’d been hopeful that she’d choose to mate with everyone on my team. But now that this had happened…well, she’s got a human view of the world, instilled in her through twenty formative years spent in a Western Earth culture. There’s no way she’ll agree to be with all of us. Not now.

And I am really, really pissed about it.

Every time I look at Wade, I want to punch him, to wipe the satisfied expression off his face. Yeah, he tries to make it look like he’s shocked or like he’s mystified or something, but I call it like I see it.
